There are many different types of insulation available. There are several different things that go into figuring out which insulation will work best for you. The special details that are unique to your home and the inclination of the installer and two big things to think about.
The first thing to do when buying attic insulation is figuring out what type of R value you need for your area. Insulation with a higher R value will be thicker and heavier. Your R value will also be determined by the climate in your local area. You will get differing levels of insulation with the various R values in insulation. You will need to decide which type of insulation will have the R value you need. Once you know the right R value for your home you can then figure out which type of insulation will give you what you need.
Some of the more common types of attic insulation are reflective, blankets, loose-fill spray, blown-in attic insulation and rigid. Each of these materials has some advantages and they do not all have the same R values. Loose fill spray is probably the most popular type of insulation. Some of the types of loose fill insulation include polyurethane foam, rock wool, fiberglass, and cellulose. It works great for those areas in the attic that are hard to reach. Most often this type of insulation is sprayed in with a blower. You will need specially equipment to install loose fill attic insulation in your attic.
Home owners who want to install the insulation themselves should think about installing reflective or blanket insulation. You can purchase blanket insulation in rolls that are made from either fiberglass or rock wool. You install the insulation by cutting off pieces which will fit the various areas of your attic. Blanket insulation can be purchased either with or without a vapor retardant. Rigid insulation can be made from several different types of foam. Even with its light weight it can provide great thermal and acoustical insulation. Reflective insulation is a foil lined surface that is designed to reduce the amount of heat that flows downward.
