So what are window shutters and why should you use them on your windows

by on Nov.05, 2011, under Renovation

Window Shutters are a solid framed stable set of blind louvers that are used to cover a doorway or window, rather than using a drape. They are usually vertical rods with horizontal blades. Infrequently they can be made of other materials , for example fabrics, glass or plastics. Usually they are added to a window to block out sunlight (or opened to allow daylight in) and to close at night to keep the ones that are outside from seeing in the house.

They add some value to houses because they help to reduce cooling and heating bills and they look great, open or shut. Shutters can be placed over window frames or within the frame. Occasionally they can be placed on the interior of the window or on the outside, called exterior shutters. Often shutters can be made to fit over doors also. Back in the 1970′s wooden shutters were extremely popular as closet doors.

Hinges hold the shutters in place making allowance for half the side to be swung outward to open. The louvers can also be opened by twisting a rod (or pulling the rod up and back down) that's hooked up to each louver individually. The shutter can remain shut, and the blades opened to allow some light in or they can be completely swung open to allow the whole window to be uncovered. These can be called either plantation shutters or California shutters.

The blades can come in different sizes and widths. Infrequently the louvers can be fixed and not left opened. These permit a minimum of light through, sometimes they're placed on windows where having the blades opened are not obligatory. They can be placed on closet doors or doors where they're going to serve more of a decoration than a function. Often shutters can be raised, like a window or a shade. Multiple tiered shutters allows for different parts of the window to be opened or shut separate from the other. Cafe shutters covers the bottom portion of the window only.

A horizontal divider rail can be made with full height shutters, dividing the top and bottom parts. The top and bottom can be operated separately, so you can open the top and keep the bottom shut or vice versa. Shutters can be made from wood, fabrics, glass, plastics, and other synthesised materials. Wood is the hottest material, because wood can be stained and or painted to match the exterior or interior of the home or building.

Shutters can be custom made to fit any size windows, even windows that are odd formed like semi-circles, or arched, or bay, or octagon, etc. Generally shutters are straightforward to install. They add personality and class to any home or office. They act to be both decorative and working to keep sunlight or moonlight out. They are excellent to help lower application costs to cool rooms in the summertime and helps to keep heat in during the winters. They add value to a home. They look excellent on either old houses or more modern expressive style.
