Easy Hardwood Floor Cleaning Tips

by GrantS on Oct.28, 2009, under Uncategorized

Maintenance of a hardwood floor in a manner that it continues to look new all the time is not a skilled job, but it certainly needs to be taken care of on a regular basis.Especially for rooms that experience heavy traffic or are exposed to additional “treatment” from kids and pets, it’s essential that you keep an eye for suspicious stains, marks and spilled or sticky substances.

Floors can be categorized in two: wax finished and surface finished and each needs to be treated in a different manner. Apart from the regular cleaning that involves dust-mopping, sweeping and proper vacuuming, you should be aware of how to take care on their getting damaged accidently which can’t be avoided for ever. So you have to take warnish steam cleaner seriously.

Starting with the regular cleaning routine itself, never use water to clean the surface. It’s important to get instructions and recommendations of the floor manufacturer or the floor finish manufacturer, as the case be, to check the use of damp mops for cleaning, otherwise water can cause immediate irreparable damage to the protective coating and subsequently to the main floor.Once done, the floor would experience many negative side effects such as buckling and crowning, as well as the surface losing its color and shine. Recommended cleaners by the manufacturer should only be used, in stead of using dust and surface cleaners that are often found in most of the homes. If the latter is unknown, use a generic hardwood floor cleaner that’s designed for the type of floor finish you have.

You should not delay taking action against any stains caused by ink or pets. You would almost always have to use a very fine or fine steel wool to take off the finish away (wax or polyurethane) before you can reach the contamination.

It’s good idea to use Oreck floor scrubber besides regular equipment. Use the specified wood floor cleaner along with a bit of mineral spirits to get rid of the stain, give sometime for the area to get dried up and then apply wax before finally buffing it.

Choosing Floor Tiles

by GrantS on Oct.09, 2009, under Uncategorized

When your home flooring is worse worse for wear it is time to decide on whether to replace it. That decision will depend on the room you are flooring. End of line products can help to make fantastic savings for covering small areas. Generally wet areas such as the kitchen or bathroom require a durable material and there are a lot of options available now without breaking the budget.

Amtico tiles are a high quality floor product. These tiles are non-porous, long lasting with exeptional colour fastness enabling the tiles to retain stunning visual appeal for many years after installation. But let us look at why floor tiles are a perfectly ok option.

For kitchen and bathroom areas popular choices include laminate, vinyl and resin compound tiles. There are various differences, the main one being that a laminate will give you more of a wood type look without actually being wood, if that is the kind of look you are after.

Vinyl comes in a wood effect too and you might be amazed at the sheer number of colours, patterns and styles you can get. Go for a symetrical pattern such as a chessboard effect or go for completely different and contrasting tiles in rooms such as your kitchen, bathroom, WC or laundry room. No longer is vinyl required to be in one standard colour like it was many years ago. Flooring products have improved greatly over the last decade or so along with the colour, style, finish and cost options available.

First you need to consider what you can afford and laminate or vinyl tiles are very desireable yet low cost options. The cheapest option tends to be laminate tiles although vinyl and other similar resin compound tiles can also come in at reasonable prices and there tends to be a much wider choice in style too.

Many people would love to be able to use real wood or real marble for their flooring but overall the cost factor usually makes this out of the question. Don’t despair as there are many vinyl and laminate options that give you that look of wood or marble but without the price tag. There is no comparison in quality but the finished results can be impressive to say the least.

There are of course real wood or marble options for the areas of your house, again it all comes down to what it is you are looking for that will suit your home and of course the all important costs involved.

Laminate and vinyl flooring have other benefits in that they are very easy to clean and no polishing required as with real wood. All you need is your mop and bucket.

Vinyl comes in rolls and tiles of various sizes and you need to choose what will suit the overall area that you want to cover. There are many colour and finish options in vinyl, laminate and resin compound tiles that it might take a long time choosing which colour would look best.

An important tip especially when you are looking to re-floor a small area is to look out for the sales at the local suppliers. Often over stocks or replaced designs or colours will be offered at special prices so you may find a bargain with usually quite expensive brands of vinyl being offered at a discounted rate. They do not always have the exact amount you want however so be careful if you want to floor a larger area of your house.

Just make sure you do your research, find out what special offers are available especially for the smaller areas such as the bathroom/WC. There are so many great deals to be found if you look for them.

Grout Cleaner Or Cleaning Services?

by GrantS on Sep.11, 2009, under Uncategorized

The best place to find a grout cleaning service is with a local carpet cleaner. People who know their stuff will use a pressure washer so they can clean deep own the grout. All the dirt will be cleaned by the powerful pressure washer since it will break her, push it to surface and then suck it out of the grout with a vacuum. Since this washer is using quite strong chemicals to do the business, you won’t find it in a public use at all. In case you are concerned and do not use these chemicals in your home, you can use cleaning services to clean the floors with steam power. But, I would say they are not so good for this job.

Besides fantastic cleaning of your floor, you will benefit from two more things when calling a cleaning service. You save a lot of time and hassle this way. In case you are using grout cleaner and a single brush, you will need an entire day to get rid of all the dirt on your tile floors. The technicians can get the job done very quickly. Further, you will not have to suffer with a sore back from bending over continuously or sore knees from the hard tile floor. You can enjoy your gleaming grout and tile more if you are not nursing sore joints.

I think we can agree that the compromise is the best solution. Besides calling cleaning service to take care of my floors, I also love to do some grout cleaning on my own and make the floors look much better. In addition to the dirt you can see, there are bacteria and things that get into your grout that you cannot see so I feel it is important to occasionally get the heavy duty cleaning only a professional service can provide.

When I keep track of the visits from carpet cleaners, I can do some cleaning by myself and then the work is not so hard and my floors are looking much better. If you can keep the dirt on top of the surface and now allow it to go deep down, you won’t have to use grout cleaning services so often.

How To Use Grout Sealant

by GrantS on Aug.11, 2009, under Uncategorized

It’s hard to find a floor type that is so durable and easy to maintain as tile floor. And just like with all used surfaces, there are some tricks you are able to do so your floor will look like it is brand new.

A simple and effective process home owners usually overlook is grout sealing. There are many people that think grout used on glazed tiles does not require to be sealed, but that is a wrong asumption. I know that there are many installers who do not think grout needs to be sealed, but the truth is, you will maintain your floor much easier. It also helps to repel water and stains from the porous grout surface. This simple process also goes a long way for homeowners who are preparing their home for sale. An clean entrance with a sparkling grout line makes a great first impression.

There are few simple steps you need to take with grout sealer.

You can start sealing after 30 days if you have a new floor that needs your attention.

Before you start with the sealing, clean the tiles with a neutral PH cleaner. Use a damp mop to prevent water from pooling in the joints. The grout will be in bad condition if you use vinegar or bleach to clean it, so you should never use them at all. To get rid of the dirt and stains from the grout lines, you will have to buy and use small brush. Use clean water to rinse the surface and dry the tiles with a cloth.

It is possible to have such a dirty grout so that even extreme cleaning can’t help to bring a decent look to the floor. In those situations, a grout stain pen will work wonders. When you pick the color that suits you best, run it all the way the grout line. It’s capable of doing two tasks because it has a sealer.

Do not mix the brands. it’s the last tip I can give you. The finished result is much more effective when you re-apply the same product.

Your Hardwood Floors Can Be More Beautiful With A Floor Buffer

by GrantS on Aug.11, 2009, under Uncategorized

Figure out what type of floor you have installed so you can start with proper cleaning. In case you are a proud owner of a sealed floor, then it is most likely a surface sealed floor that will not take much of your time. You probably have a penetrating seal treated floor if you have older floor installed. You will need to apply more oils and wax to maintain this type of floor.

For cleaning hardwood floors, in the case of a surface sealed floor, you merely need to mop using a product recommended by your flooring manufacturer. To be safe, use only products that do not have any oil included. For this type of flooring, one soap and one damp mop would be a safe solution. Since wood floors can be damaged with sitting water, you have to dry the surface completely when you finish your task.

In case you have a penetrating seal floor in your home, you won’t be able to use water based products while mopping. Instead, for routine cleanings, you can simply sweep or vacuum your floor. Every once in a while, for a deeper cleaning, you will need to strip the old wax coating and apply a new one. Usually, you will need to do this two times a year, but you can do it more often.

Manufacturers directions should be follower while using stripper here. Make sure you have a good ventilation so your hardwood floors can dry properly. Check what kind of wax can be used on your type of floor, the manufacturer should tell you this. Follow directions and apply one or two coats, or as many as desired.

Applying home floor scrubber is the last and most important step. It’s necesasry to use process like this so you can achieve beautiful shine and that the wax can properly sink in the floor. Most people think it is a great idea to buy wood floor buffer because it helps them finish the job sooner and with less hassle. I think it is very important to know that a new floor bufer machines you buy will pay itself off after you use it for several times.

Laminate Flooring – Information about Laminate Flooring

by GrantS on Jul.03, 2009, under Uncategorized

Although carpet and hardwood are two of the most popular choices when it comes to flooring, they are sometimes inadequate.  Certain areas of the home like the kitchen, or garage, commonly demand a greater degree of durability and resilience.  Carpet absorbs stains and moisture too easily, leading to a dingy looking surface that may also attract odors.  Hardwood offers a tougher surface than carpet, but it also suffers from problems with moisture.  A moist hardwood gradually warps and cracks.  After several years of expansion and contraction, moisture damage can become very apparent with a hardwood floor.

Places in which spills and accidents are frequent can cause scratching or gouging in the flooring as well.  Laminate flooring is a wonderful solution for water damage and durability issues.  With a laminate floor, designers can have the aesthetic allure of hardwood, while dodging many of the typical problems.  Laminate flooring is very resilient when it comes to moisture issues and will not absorb water.  Stains are not an issue, and as long as they are cleaned up promptly, will cause no lasting damage at all.
Fortunately, laminate flooring is very affordable, and can be found in a wide range of shades, colors, and styles.

Laying down laminate flooring is also relatively simple.  As soon as a set of tiles can be unwrapped, check each to ensure that each tile is intact.  Once sure that all the tiles are in good condition, give the tiles a few days to acclimate to their new atmosphere.  There may be some contraction or expansion that occurs when the laminate flooring tiles change environment.

Make certain to follow all manufacturer instructions that are included with the tile product.  Specific instructions on how to glue the tiles are crucial, and can affect the overall performance of the tile.  It is also important to give the tile a quarter inch between wall and flooring.  Although a great deal of tools isn’t required for in home installation, you may have to cut the tiles to fit around corners, fireplaces, stairs, etc.  A wet tile saw would definitely be adequate to cut laminate flooring.

Having a level surface for installation is also important.  Be certain to fill any holes in the subflooring, or sand away any protruding areas that might stick up afterward.

Hardwood Floors – Information About Hardwood Flooring Installation

by GrantS on Feb.02, 2009, under Home Improvement

Visit Best Flooring Options to read more advice about hardwood floor care and installing laminate flooring.

Hardwood flooring installation can be an arduous and sometimes complicated job, but if you feel confident giving it a try, you can end up saving quite a considerable amount of money. Properly installed hardwoods can last for several years, even under moist and humid conditions, such as in a bathroom. With a little advice and a step by step guide, as well as plenty of time, hardwood flooring installation can be done without exorbitant professional services.

Moisture causes the most damage to hardwood flooring. Moisture can gradually warp the surface of the wood as it expands and contracts. This does not imply, however, that hardwood flooring cannot be installed in wetter conditions. Hardwood flooring simply requires a little preventive care in order to work well under these conditions. Installing hardwood with an asphalt felt should provide a great degree of protection against rotting and warping of the hardwood. Take 15 pound asphalt felt, and put it over the subfloor in overlapping sections. The felt should be tacked down with a staple gun.

Leave a minor gap, around half an inch, between the asphalt felt and the wall. A baseboard or base shoe will be secured in these smaller spaces between the flooring and the wall. The first three boards of the flooring should be put down by hand. Board lengths are typically random, so segments of the flooring should be set out as a test before nailing down. When the first boards are laid down, the remainder can be placed with a flooring nailer. This will make it simpler to do an accurate job of laying out the flooring.

When the new flooring results in an uneven surface, you can employ a reducer to create an even surface. When preparing to install a hardwood floor, be sure to safely store the wood. Placing the wood out in the open where it can get wet will lead to warped and cracked flooring that cannot be installed properly. If the flooring must be stored outdoors, be sure to cover it with a waterproof tarp. This can prevent any moisture from causing permanent damage. Do not transport wood flooring in an open bed when weather conditions could give rise to rain or high humidity.
