The Importance Of Getting A Professional To Fit Your Gutters
by GrantS on Dec.29, 2009, under Uncategorized
In wet weather, there is a lot of rain that hits your home. Your house principally does the job of protecting your house and everything in it from this rain. To aid this process, nearly every homeowner’s roof is sloped so that water can easily run off it and stop water forming in roof pockets. Without the sloped roof, it can become severely damaged and eventually holes will form where the rainwater once was. That’s why you need gutters, and cast iron ones are a great choice.
The reason guttering is so important is that without it, you would find that the rainwater would splash down in front of your house and soak your walls as it fell off the roof, which could seep inside if it hit door frames. After this, puddles would collect which are dangerous and the water would just sit there for ages. All in all this would cause damage to the structure of your house, it can rot away wooden window and door frames and cause cracks in paving amongst other problems. During winter this damage does not take long to manifest itself and can cause further damage itself.
So, that’s why gutters and pipes are put in place to prevent any danger to your home. They collect the rainwater once it has reached the end of its descent. You will notice that there is a very small slope in the guttering which helps the rainwater filter into the down pipe and into the drain. If you’re wanting something that will stand the test of time through many years of rainwater drainage, cast iron gutters are the best option.
If your guttering is installed by someone who doesn’t really know what they’re doing, then you might find you have gutters that are pitched away from the wall and don’t do a very good job. Another point to note is that gutters that cause the rainwater to gather in only one area of the guttering can cause major damage problems to the wall underneath.
Water pressure should never be underestimated and without a proper filtering system it can cause serious brickwork damage to your home. With cast iron gutters though, you will find that they require very little maintenance and a professional will fit them properly.
Home Financing – How It Works
by GrantS on Dec.29, 2009, under Uncategorized
So you want to improve your home with some new guttering? Congratulations on deciding to improve your home, although the next question is a little bit more daunting – where are the funds coming from? Looks like its time to get to grips with home improvement financing in order to start the grand plans you have.
The first step to figuring out home improvement financing is to figure out what you even want to do with your house. For example, are you simply planning to replace the guttering or do you have grander plans, like putting up a new conservatory? Consider the maximum budget you have. After you answer these questions, it’s time to start looking at what options are available to you.
It is recommended by the experts that small jobs not costing over a few hundred pounds or dollars should be put on a credit card. If you are wanting some copper gutters for example, a small job like this could easily be put onto the credit card, whereas larger jobs would need finance.
If you need to head down the route of financing, it is a good idea to look at home equity loans. The benefit of a loan like this is that you simply release some of the value (equity) from your home so you can invest it back into the property. There are some stipulations with a home equity loan though, and the main one is that you need a licensed contractor to come over and do the work.
You might also find that you qualify for being able to free up some cash from your life insurance fund. With this plan, you can borrow up to 96% of your policy and only have to pay the interest which leads to a very low rate for you. It is important to remember, however, that taking out a loan like this and then dying before its been paid off will result in your family only receiving a very small payout.
Throughout this article it is hoped that you will have found a couple of useful ideas that you can take away with you, and if you’re planning on doing more than just installing copper gutters then you will need the appropriate funds. Make sure you shop around and find out what will work best for you.
Choosing Floor Tiles
by GrantS on Oct.09, 2009, under Uncategorized
When your home flooring is worse worse for wear it is time to decide on whether to replace it. That decision will depend on the room you are flooring. End of line products can help to make fantastic savings for covering small areas. Generally wet areas such as the kitchen or bathroom require a durable material and there are a lot of options available now without breaking the budget.
Amtico tiles are a high quality floor product. These tiles are non-porous, long lasting with exeptional colour fastness enabling the tiles to retain stunning visual appeal for many years after installation. But let us look at why floor tiles are a perfectly ok option.
For kitchen and bathroom areas popular choices include laminate, vinyl and resin compound tiles. There are various differences, the main one being that a laminate will give you more of a wood type look without actually being wood, if that is the kind of look you are after.
Vinyl comes in a wood effect too and you might be amazed at the sheer number of colours, patterns and styles you can get. Go for a symetrical pattern such as a chessboard effect or go for completely different and contrasting tiles in rooms such as your kitchen, bathroom, WC or laundry room. No longer is vinyl required to be in one standard colour like it was many years ago. Flooring products have improved greatly over the last decade or so along with the colour, style, finish and cost options available.
First you need to consider what you can afford and laminate or vinyl tiles are very desireable yet low cost options. The cheapest option tends to be laminate tiles although vinyl and other similar resin compound tiles can also come in at reasonable prices and there tends to be a much wider choice in style too.

An important tip especially when you are looking to re-floor a small area is to look out for the sales at the local suppliers. Often over stocks or replaced designs or colours will be offered at special prices so you may find a bargain with usually quite expensive brands of vinyl being offered at a discounted rate. They do not always have the exact amount you want however so be careful if you want to floor a larger area of your house.
Just make sure you do your research, find out what special offers are available especially for the smaller areas such as the bathroom/WC. There are so many great deals to be found if you look for them.
Roof Felt Forms Moisture Barrier For Shingles
by GrantS on Aug.26, 2009, under Uncategorized
When it comes to roofing materials, roofing felt is to shingles what an underlayment is to asphalt flooring, serving as a moisture barrier between the bare wood of the roof and the shingles, adding an extra protection of waterproofing. Made of fiberglass or polyester fleece impregnated with tar or some other bituminous material, roofing felt serves to protect the roof from weather conditions.
Install roofing felt is just as important as installing the shingles, and due to the weight of the materials and handling methods, it not an easy job. Especially considering it should be installed in warmer weather to create a better bond at seams, it can be not only a heavy materials job, but also a hot job.
To install roofing felt on an existing roof, it is best to tear off the old roof before beginning, and is a necessity on a new roof. When replacing shingles on an old roof, and all the old material has been removed, verify there are no nails sticking up that could damage the roofing felt. Rolls of felt are typically 36” wide and are available from 30-feet to 100-foot lengths, and some types have a light grit on one side to keep it from sticking together in storage.
Installation Technique For Roofing Felt
Begin by laying the first layer at the eave of the roof, leaving about a one-inch drip edge over the gutter, from one end to the other. It is best if this can be a single piece but if a seam is necessary, the overlap should be four to six inches. At both edges, depending on whether it is the end of the roof or at a wall, the roofing felt should still be about two-inches longer than needed to serve as a drip edge or to go under metal flashing at a wall.
The second roll should overlap the first piece by at least six inches and if a seam is necessary, it should not be at the same spot as the seam in the first row. Seams should be at least two feet apart. If using re-roofing felt with grit on one side, install the grit-side up and use cold tar sealer in the overlap of the two rows.
When cuts to the roll are made, never make them on top of the previous layer of felt. Mark the spot on the roll for the cut, and then place a cutting board under it to protect the existing surface from the sharp knife. This provides a clean cut and will not bring the knife into contact with the new roofing felt being installed. Continue adding layers to the remainder of the roof surface and when you reach the peak, allow the roofing felt to lie over the top as a first layer on the peak.

Types of Roofing Materials
by GrantS on Aug.26, 2009, under Uncategorized
Most people who don’t work in the construction trades don’t spend any time at all thinking about their house. They leave it in the morning to go to work and then return home to it after work. Generally thinking, unless something needs to be painted, people easily neglect items that need to be fixed or repaired. One area of the house that’s easy to monitor and doesn’t have to be looked at all of the time is the roof. Roofing materials can degrade over time and when there has been a wind storm, tiles can be torn away form the rest of the roofing materials.
Depending on where people live, roofing materials vary by regions. In California, especially in the south, Mexican influences have made clay tiles a popular choice. They won’t burn and they stay in place during the “Santa Ana” winds that frequent the south. In the northern states that get snow and winds, those Mexican tiles wouldn’t work because they aren’t made to hold snow. In fact, many homes in the north have high wind rated interlocking roof materials. If a homeowner isn’t sure what to do about a roof, they can either call a roofing services contractor (roofer) or go to one of the large home warehouses and ask the sales people.
More On Roofing Materials
Regardless of what part of the country people live in, a roof will need some attention whether it is to replace it or repair damage after a storm. Try to get in the habit of looking at the roof periodically as well as after any major storm. So fixing the roof right away is the prudent thing to do.

This would be the right time to put on the roofing materials that a person has always admired. The prices for new roofing materials can range from inexpensive to very expensive. The roofing a person likes is usually the one that can’t be afforded. It just works out that way.Take care of the roof over the house and it will give years of protection in return.
